| CLEANING AND MAINTAINING YOUR CEDAR ROOF
Anyone looking to get the most out of their cedar roofing will, from time to time, have to spend a few hours performing maintenance it. Leaves can collect, cracks can appear, shakes can work their way loose, and though Cedarex cedar roofing is guaranteed, and will generally repel water, leaves and sunlight after our treatment process, a few hours up a ladder will generally add years to the end of that 50-year lifespan.
When you do climb up on your roof, it is important that you understand a few safety guidelines that will keep you from doing yourself harm. You want to perform what needs to be done without doing damage to yourself - and to the roof itself. Both are fragile (you, more so).
First of all, make sure you have great footwear with a strong grip for walking on a slanted and/or wooden surface. NEVER use spikes, for they can damage the shingles or shakes and invalidate your warranty. Heavy work boots can also reek havoc, so a good pair of sneakers is often the best footwear choice when it comes to working on your cedar roof.

Secondly, make sure you are using a good ladder that meets all safety requirements. The ladder needs to be in near new condition and in solid working order. You should also make sure it is tall enough to reach at least 3 feet above the roof line - remember, it's easier to climb up than it is to climb down! Before you climb it, it should also be set on stable and level ground.
Third, use some sort of container like a bucket to haul up tools and materials to your roof when you are working. If you tie a rope to a bucket, materials can be simply be pulled up and lowered down in an easy manner.
Fourth, make sure you tread lightly and carefully when walking on the roof. For instance, always try to walk across the roof surface rather than up and down. This prevents cracking and stress on the shakes.
Finally, if there is too much of a slant in your roof, proper safety must be your first consideration. If your roof is more than 16 feet above the ground, then you may have to use safety lines and belts to prevent falling injuries. If the roof is overly slanted, you may need to leave the roof maintenance to professionals with the proper equipment. However, if you are careful and take your time, you should be able to keep your roof clean and happy with little problem.
Performing maintenance is just a part of owning a home with a cedar roof, especially in a place like Vancouver. Take an afternoon aside once a year to perform a simple clean and inspection, and remember to keep your warranty papers close at hand, so the good folks at Cedarex can come around and correct any problem that might arise.
